A branch of the Diocesan ECW, the Leeds Church ECW is an organization of women who support the church and local community through on-going and special activities, such as funeral receptions and Ruritan club dinners. They provide school supplies and Christmas gifts to underprivileged kids in our local community, as well fund scholarships for children to attend our preschool (LEAP) and summer camp at Shrinemont, our diocesan camp center. This group is open to all women.
They produce a variety of artistic pieces for the church’s use and to be sold in support of outreach ministries. They participate in our annual St. Nicholas Day, a large crafts sale at Leeds Church in early December.
Our youth usually meet several times a month for “Popcorn Theology.” We use movies to discuss spirituality and significant life topics that are relevant to young people. In addition, we go on weekend trips for fellowship and Christian formation. This program year, we are going to New York City and Charlottesville. Finally, during the summer, our youth go on a mission trip to Philadelphia and volunteer with a variety of urban non-profits.
We meet once a month at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Delaplane for fellowship and theological disussion. Child care and dinner are always provided.
We meet occassionally for fellowship and we help out with the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner. Recent events include a fishing outing and a weekend retreat at a lodge in the woods. All men are welcome to participate in this group.
This regular gathering of women from the church and local community engages in social events and learning opportunities. Past topics include aerobic and yoga, dealing with stress, grief counseling, mother/daughter relationships, gardening, and international travel. Highlights each summer include the yearly “Book Night” and the “Margarita Madness” party.
Each month, there is a parish wide fellowship event at Leeds. Often they are Saturday or Sunday evening potlucks in the homes of church members; these dinners provide a wonderful evening of fellowship and a chance for new and old members to get to know one another better. Sometimes the youth of the parish provide baby-sitting services at the church for these events.
In early September, we mark the start of Sunday School and the beginning of the new program year with a festive luncheon after the 10:30 AM Eucharist.
Each spring, Leeds Church holds a “Parish Weekend” at Shrinemont, the Diocese of Virginia camp center in Orkney Springs, VA. Families and singles of all ages attend. Besides the beautiful scenery and the delicious, bountiful food served at Shrinemont, participants enjoy special activities provided by their fellow parishioners (e.g.: art class, hay ride, historical tour, book discussion, crafts, Tai Chi), as well as hiking, fishing, and fellowship time. We also worship together at the Cathedral Shrine of the Transfiguration on Sunday morning. Children and youth especially find Shrine Mont a delightful place to enjoy nature and have fun. Parents find Shrinemont to be a safe place, where their children can roam with their friends, old and new.
On Pentecost Sunday, each Spring, we conclude the program year with a festive picnic at the church. At the 10:30 AM Eucharist, we recognize the Sunday School students and those graduating from high school. Afterwards, we usually grill and celebrate the coming of summer.
